Pelargoniums

SPECIES PELARGONIUMS .

Tuberous-rooted Pelargoniums are very attractive small plants. They are separated into Winter and Summer dormant groups and should be kept dry in their dormant season. Some adapt well to garden conditions, providing they have a relatively dry rest when dormant. Some will increase from tubers, whilst others can only be propagated from seed.

Shrubby Pelargoniums are good in the garden and can grow into quite large and attractive plants. They are propagated from cuttings or seeds.

Succulent Pelargoniums can also be propagated from cuttings or seeds, but need dryer conditions in summer.

Potting Mix. All species may be grown in pots, in a mixture of sharp sand, loam and leaf compost, with a little Blood and Bone and some Potash. The best time to pot them up is in Autumn and Spring, when they should first be watered to start them into growth.

Watering. Tuberous-rooted and succulent Pelargoniums should be watered, in their growing season, only when almost dry, but do not keep them as dry as you would cacti and some other succulents. Shrubby Pelargoniums will take more water, so keep them moist but not wet. They will need good drainage if planted in the garden.
